Description

Estella (Paiva) Sylvia, a sister of Mary J. Paiva, the mother of Lillian Francis McMackin. Called “Aunt Stella” by family members, Estella was born on the island of Sao Miguel in 1893 and immigrated with her family to the U.S., settling in New Bedford in 1896. She married Joseph Sylvia, an automobile mechanic and also from the Azores, and had one stepdaughter, Evelyn Sylvia. Estella is pictured here with her nephew, Robert McMackin at the summer home of Lillian F. McMackin, Lillian’s youngest son, in Dunbarton, New Hampshire in the early 1950s.
