Description
This is an image of a Civil War soldier named Anthony Silver. His name was originally Antonio Silveira.
Antonio was born in 1828 on the island of Faial in the Azores. His parents were Jose Silveira da Escobar and Maria Rita da Rosa.
His obituary in the January 4, 1902 issue of the Yarmouth Register reads:
"Antoine Silver, a veteran of the war of the Rebellion, died on Friday, Dec. 27, at his home on Camp Street. He was a member of Yanno Post, No. 213, G.A.R. The funeral was on Tuesday and the burial at West Harwich. Mr. Silver was born in Fayal, one of the Western Islands, and came to this country in 1848. He followed the sea until the outbreak of the rebellion, in 1861, when he enlisted and served until the close of the war. He was twice wounded and received an honorable discharge. Since then he has lived in Hyannis. He was a good citizen, parents, and husband. He married Betsey C. Wixon of West Harwich and had four sons and three daughters, viz: Joseph, Anthony, John, George W., who was killed by an accident on a freight train, and Mrs. Lizzie Robbins, Mrs. Ruth Nickerson, and Miss Bessie Sylver. His second wife was Octaobia Kelley of West Harwich."
