Record of the 1921-1934 meeting minutes for the Portuguese Benefit Society of Our Lady of Help, transcribed by the secretary or acting secretary at the time.
The book opens with a listing of the names for each established officer positions for the club: President, Vice President, Secretary of the Meeting Minutes, Secretary of Correspondences, Treasurer, Collector, Financier, Master of Ceremonies, and "Vigilante." Each entry begins with the date and time the meeting started, who of the "brothers" were in attendance and who was absent, what was discussed, and information about the finances and membership dues. Every meeting begins with a call to order by the President followed by role call and the reading of the past meeting minutes for approval. Correspondences, such as bills, thank you notes, and other letters sent to the Portuguese Benefit Society are read aloud for the officers, and any members receiving disability benefits are also noted on the record. When the meeting formally begins, a number of topics are discussed, such as voting on applicants for new society members, significant events and services that week, disability reports for disabled members, special committee reports, and information on departed members.
The treasurer's report presented in each meeting contains information about the Mortuary (Death) Fund, the Disability Fund, and the General Expenses Fund; the benefits paid to society members since the last meeting; any bills paid; the rent paid for the Hall for that time period; the amount of money in the society's savings and bank accounts; and other receipts and details about monetary expenses for the Portuguese Benefit Society.
The last page of the book details the events and expenses related to the Special Funds, such as dances and picnics, for 1922-1924.
Scans of notes and papers found throughout the book that could not be displayed properly in their original location can be found at the end of the PDF. The Notice of Employer's Identification Number note was found on page 102; the four doctor's notes, the two statements of receipts and expenses of dances run by the Committee of Women in 1927 and 1928, and a correspondence regarding a "real estate muddle" were all found on page 223; a letter from Manuel Gil regarding his physical health was found on page 316; a letter from the Portuguese Civic Club was found and pictured on page 500; and finally, an official document from Massachusett's Department of Banking and Insurance was found and pictured on the back cover of the book.
