The cover of the book states that the Portuguese Benefit Society was founded August 15th, 1904 and was recognized by the Massachusetts State Government on May 9th, 1910. The bylaws open with a copy of the declaration made by the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, William M. Olin, on May 9th of 1910 that asserted the legitimacy of the Portuguese Benefit Society's organization and its purpose. The founding members of the society are listed, including the first president, Frank Aguiar.
The rest of the book details the constitution of the society and its respective bylaws in both Portuguese and English. These two identical sections are divided into chapters to discuss topics such as the organization's name and purpose; members and the admittance of members; admissions fees; time and meeting places; the officers of the society; the process for nominations, elections, and initiations; the duties of officers and committees; the duties and privileges of members; member benefits; withdrawals from the organization; member penalties; the rules of order; ballots, funds and dues; the order of business for meetings; and other additional rules.
