Description
Among other topics, Ernest expresses his joy at the possibility of Bishop da Silva returning [to Lowell] in June. He then states that Bishop da Silva's choice to place himself under British protection [at the English College] was a wise decision.
The letter was sent from Lowell, Massachusetts, and delivered to the English College (Colégio dos Inglesinhos) in Lisbon.
Transcript:
Dear Bishop,
Harry gave me to read the kind, and interesting letter you sent him, and I enjoyed it very much. The good news of your returning in June makes me feel very happy, and gives me some new courage. I do not see Harry only once a week, and then he always has some kind of an astonishing story to tell about Henry Joseph, of course the kid might be clever, but I think Harry is telling us a falsehood when he says the baby is a great opera critic. I read about the King Manuel's intentions to restore the monarchy and I supposed it caused much trouble there. It was a very wise move to place yourself under British protection. Harry often regrets that he did not see you when you sailed. Both Joe and I feel sorry that we was not able to be with you longer than we were. The people here are loseing [losing] there [their] interest in the miracles that happen so often in the St. Rita's church, but I think that the only real miracle would be, if [illegible] Powers forgot to take up his collection at the services. I have been sick with a heavy cold for almost three weeks, but now I feel fine. The large snowstorms here have been terrible, we have had the largest storms in twenty-five years. Brother Joe is still driving his machine and giving orders, and at last he does not ask for a little push from Chester. I have not seen Chester for a long time but Joe says that he is still at Davis Square. Well Bishop I guess that I have told you all the news for now, so I will close, expecting a letter very soon from you. My mother and Joe send you their best regards. And I hope that you have great success in your business there.
Well Your Grace I will say
(Au Revoir)
Lovingly yours
Ernest
