Title

Letter from Father Augusto Joaquim Taveira to Henrique José Reed da Silva (January 5th, 1905)

Date

1905-01-15 circa

Description

Father Taveira recalls the moment that he left Lisbon to take up residence in America and describes the reason he decided to stay in this country while stating what ties him to his homeland.

He reminisces on the time that he was alone in the church administration for the Church of Saint Anthony and discusses the advantages of this. He then addresses the matter of suffraging the souls of the deceased and suggests that Bishop da Silva celebrate the aforementioned masses, namely for the soul of Francisco da Rocha de Borba, at the request of José da Rocha de Borba.

He counsels Bishop da Silva to abandon the idea of appointing the title of Monsignor to Father José Duarte Nunes. Finally, he talks about receiving English lessons and teaching Portuguese to American doctors.

The letter was sent from Taunton, Massachusetts.
