Title
Letter from Father Augusto Joaquim Taveira to Henrique José Reed da Silva (March 6th, 1904)
Date
1904-03-06
Description
Father Taveira accounts how he arrived in the city of New Bedford, Massachusetts after coming from New York, where he landed 5 days ago. He details the feelings that New York provoked in him, invoking the lavishness of the city that, at the cost of modernity, brings ease to the day-to-day lives of its people. Regarding the United States in general, Father Taveira discusses the churches as well as the stipends and donations that the priests receive. He mentions the Portuguese congregation in Fall River as well as Taunton, Massachusetts, a place where many Azoreans live. He gives information relevant to the prelate of Providence and details the way to become a pastor there.
