Letter from the Secretary of State for Navy and Overseas Affairs for Bishop Resignation of Henrique José Reed da Silva

This official correspondence refers to the decree, dated the 28th of July in 1897, in which the king accepts the resignation of the bishopric of São Tomé de Meliapor, requested by the resigning bishop of the aforementioned diocese, Henrique José Reed da Silva. It mentions that Reed da Silva had been presented by decree on November 25th, 1886 to said diocese. This letter also determines the amount to be paid by the Ministry, valued at 4,500 rupees (R. 1.800$000 or 1.8 million réis), and discusses the procedure for the respective payment. Thus, if an agreement is reached with the Holy See, the money will come from the income of the Bishop's assets, and the monthly renumeration will be made from the ministry's coffers.

Furthermore, Bishop da Silva proposes the prelate of Mozambique, António José de Sousa Barroso, as his successor. He invokes the matter as the jurisdiction of the Royal Padroado. This document is signed by [Henrique] Barros Gomes, the Minister of the Navy and Overseas. The correspondence includes a copy of the respective decree.
