Papers regarding requests made by Henrique José Reed da Silva to the Governor of Chennai, Robert Bourke, 1st Baron Connemara

This document encompasses the transfer of various official correspondences and letters as requested by the Bishop of Meliapor, Henrique José Reed da Silva, to the governor of Madrasta (Chennai). Among these transfers is the missive (1888-10-03) of Bishop da Silva, the Bishop of Mylapore. In this, he makes several requests: First, that he be recognized as the sole ecclesiastical superior of the Roman Catholic community present at Saint Thomas's Mount, including the British troops. Second, that he can correspond directly with the Governor in all matters related to the chaplaincy of that location. And third, that he be sanctioned to appoint a Portuguese priest, Basílio Nunes Moreira, who has knowledge of the English language, as the military chaplain of the aforementioned Mount.

This document includes many opinions about the issue, namely the opinion of the Archbishop of Chennai, Joseph Colgan, resulting in the final decision made by the Government of India, in Calcuta (1889-03-16).
