Here, you will find a photographic portrait of a Civil War soldier (Anthony Silva) and a group of letters (unrelated to the Civil War portrait) between the Cunha/Santos family.<br /><br /><strong>Further information on the Cunha/Santos Family Letters:</strong><br />All the letters were sent to the home of José (Joseph) da Cunha Santos in Lowell, MA between the years of 1913-1924. The letters were largely sent from José's family back on Graciosa, his home island, and were addressed to José, his wife Francisca, and his son, Joseph Cunha Santos, Jr.<br /><br /><em>Santos Family Bio</em><br />     José (Joseph) da Cunha Santos was born in Graciosa to Antonio and Maria Santos on September 27, 1875 in Graciosa, Azores. According to the 1910 census, he immigrated to the United States in 1888 at 13 years old. It is unclear if he traveled with any family members.<br />     On April 14, 1895, he married Francisca (Frances) Santos, daughter of Manoel and Delfina, who also immigrated from Graciosa. Joseph and Frances had 5 children: Joseph Jr., Maria, Eva, Rosa, Jennie, and Anthony.<br />     The Santos family spent the majority of their time in Lowell, although they briefly made a trip back to the Azores in 1908 and stayed in Providence, R.I. for a few years (1910-1912 and 1929-1930). In Lowell, they lived at 6 Molloy's Court for many years until they were able to buy a house in 1918 at 90 West Union Street. Both Joseph and Frances worked in the mills. <br />     Their son, Joseph Cunha Santos Jr., is also the recipient of some of the letters in this collection. Joseph Jr. was born on May 29, 1898 in Lowell. He married Gabriele Pinto, the daughter of a well-known local Portuguese grocer (Frank J. Pinto). Her family immigrated from Madeira in 1904. They went on to have two daughters: Laura and Mary. Joseph Jr. worked for his father-in-law at his Gorham Street store before eventually moving on to work various jobs as a laborer.
