Oral History Interview with Thomas P. Machado, April 19, 2017
Biographical Note:
Thomas P. Machado was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1944; son of Grace T. (McSorely) and John P. Machado who were born in Lowell; grandfather, also named John P. Machado, was from Terceira and immigrated to the U.S., settled in Lowell in the 1920s and worked as a weaver in a textile mill before moving to Dracut, Massachusetts, and operating a farm; Thomas P. Machado was raised in the “Highlands” neighborhood of Lowell where there were only a few Portuguese families; attended Lowell’s public schools and graduated from Lowell High School; worked several years for a beverage distributor and for the (Lowell) Courier-Citizen printing company; became a police officer and joined the Lowell police department in 1971; served as a police officer for nearly eight years; however, in the wake of a high-speed pursuit and arrest of three Lowell men who were occupants of the vehicle in Hudson, New Hampshire, Machado, who was indicted and convicted in federal court of assault and violating the civil rights of these three Lowell men, was fired from his job; during his years as a police officer Machado also owned a bar on Central Street in Lowell’s “Back Central” neighborhood; he subsequently sold the building on Central Street and established a successful paving and landscaping business in Billerica, Massachusetts.
Scope and Contents:
Interview conducted by local historian Mehmed Ali; covers the Machado family background, growing up in Lowell in a neighborhood with few Portuguese residents; factory work among Lowell’s Portuguese; some information on ethnic social clubs in the “Back Central” neighborhood; athletic and social activities related to Catholic churches in Lowell; service on the Lowell police force in the 1970s; the challenges of small business ownership in Lowell.
