LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, /JOYS AND GIRLS, HONORED GUESTS,
AND MEMBERS OF TI-IE HOLY GHOST SOCIETY. WE ARE GATHERED
HERE ONCE AGAIN TO HONOR TI-IE HOLY GHOST AND FOR A DELICIOUS
AND TRADITIONAL MEAL THAT IS OFFERED BY TI-IE HOLY Gl/OST SOCIETY,
BUT BEFORE WE BEGIN THIS MOST DESIRED MEAL, I WOULD JUST LIKE
TO SAY A FEW WORDS ABOUT TI-IE HOLY GHOST SOCIETY, /-/ERE IN TI-IE
CITY OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS .
SINCE THE YEAR 1914, THE PORTUGUESE IMMIGRANTS, MOSTLY
FROM THE AZORES ISLANDS, THAT /-JAVE SETTLED IN Tl/IS CITY HAVE BEEN
PASSING ON THEIR CULTURE AND TRADITIONS ON FROM ONE GENERATION
TO THE NEXT. INCLUDED IN THESE TRADITIONS JS THE HONORING OF THE
HOLY GHOST. THEY DID THIS WITH A MASS, FOLLOWED BY A PROCESSION
OF TRADITIONAL COSTUMES . THEY WOULD THEN ALL GATHER AT A
RESTAURANT OR HALL FOR REFRESHMENTS AND A MEAL .

I AM UNABLE TO TELL YOU W/-10 WAS THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF
THE HOLY GHOST COMM/1TEE WAS BECAUSE THERE ARE NO RECORDS
AVAILABLE. BUT AS THE YEARS PASSED, MORE AND MORE IMMIGRANTS
BEGAN SETTLING IN LAWRENCE AND SIGNED ON TO BECOME MEMBERS OF
THE HOLY GHOST SOCIETY. WITH THESE NEW MEMBERS, ALSO CAME NEW
IDEAS AND MORE MODERN WAYS TO HELP CELEBRATE THE FEASTS THAT
ARE DONE ON THE ISLANDS. NATURALLY, THERE WERE MANY CONFLICTS
IN THE BEGINNING DUE TO THE NEW IMMIGRANTS WANTING TO DO IT
MORE LIKE THE WAY IT WAS BEING DONE ON THE ISLANDS, WITH THE
OLDER MEMBERS FEELING LIKE THESE NEWER MEMBERS ARE TRYING TO
TAKE OVER. AFTER MANY MEETINGS AND DISCUSSIONS, THEY CAME TO
THE CONCLUSION THAT MODIFICATIONS WERE NEEDED TO BE MADE FOR
THE FUTURE.

IN 1976, JOSE ANDRADE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT, FOR THIS, Tl-IE
FIRST TIME THAT THE FEAST WAS CELEBRATED IN TRUE FASHION AS IT
IS IN THE ISLANDS, BARING A FEW MODIFICATIONS. THESE FEASTS WERE
ALWAYS DONE WITH LOTS OF FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES AND BECAUSE
THEY DID NOT HAVE THEIR OWN PLACE TO HOLD THESE FEASTS, THE
NEW COMMl1TEE DEDICATED THEMSELVES TO HELP SOLVE SOME OF THESE
PROBLEMS. AFTER MANY GENERAL MEETINGS, ONE OF Tl-IE FIRST THINGS
THEY FELT NEEDED TO BE DONE WAS TO LEGALIZE THEMSELVES AS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, AND IN 1983, Tl-IE HOLY GHOST SOCIETY WAS
REGISTERED AS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION.

ANOTHER TOPIC THAT WAS FREQUENTLY BROUGHT UP DURING Tl-IE
MEETINGS WAS Tl-IE IDEA THAT THE ORGANIZATION SHOULD ACQUIRE A
PLACE TO HOUSE THERE FUNCTIONS . IT ALL STARTED WITH A PICTURE ON
A SHOE BOX. THEY FELT IT WAS REALLY NECESSARY BECAUSE IT WAS
COSTING ALMOST 3 THOUSAND DOLLARS TO RENT A PLACE TO HOLD THERE
FEAST. WHEN ISABEL BARBARA WAS INFORMED THAT THE HOLY GHOST
SOCIETY WAS LOOKING FOR LAND OR A PLACE TO BUY, SHE INFORMED
VALQUIRO EIRO, THE PRESIDENT OF THE HOLY GHOST SOCIETY AT THE
TIME, OF A CLUB FOR SALE, LOCATED IN Tl-IE MIDDLE OF Tl-IE PORTUGUESE
COMMUNITY, ON ERVING AVE. THE PROPOSAL WAS BROUGHT UP IN A
MEETING WITH THE MEMBERS AND WAS VOTED IN FAVOR OF BUYING Tl-IE
CLUB WITH THE ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE OF LAWYER VICTOR J-/ATEM.
AFTER HOLDING VARIOUS FUND RAISERS AND THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF
THE COMMUNITY, WITH MRS : ROSA SOUSA, THE FIRST PERSON TO DONATE
GENEROUSLY TO THE CAUSE. IF SHE WAS ALIVE TODAY SHE WOULD BE
102 YEARS OLD . ALL TOGETHER THE SOCIETY CAME UP WITH $39,000.00
THOUSAND DOLLARS, BUT THAT WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR THE DEPOSIT.
THEN ON JULY 1, 1988, WITH THE HELP OF MR. VICTOR HATEM, NOT OF
PORTUGUESE DESCENT, HELPED FINANCIALLY UNTIL THE HOLY GHOST
HAD ITS PLACE TO CALL HOME.

THE BUILDING ITSELF NEEDED MANY REPAIRS. THE HOLY GHOST
SOCIETY, AFTER WORKING ALL DAY AT THEIR REGULAR JOBS, PUT ASIDE
THEIR PERSONAL NEEDS AND CAME WILLINGLY TO HELP REPAIR THE

HOUSE WE CALL TODAY TlIE HOME OF THE HOLY GI/OST. PEOPLE WERE
ASKING AND CONTINUE TO ASK WHY DID THEY BUY THIS CLUB IN

LAWRENCE, WHEN WE ALREADY I/AVE A PORTUGUESE CLUB HERE IN
LAWRENCE. BUT WE ALL DREAM OF OWNING OUR OWN HOME SOMEDAY,
SO WHY SHOULDN'T THE HOLY GHOST HAVE A PLACE OF ITS OWN.

REMEMBER, THE HOLY GHOST SOCIETY JS NOT HERE TO MAKE A
NAME FOR THEMSELVES OR TO COMPETE WITH ANYONE. THEY ARE HERE
FOR THE HOLY GHOST, FOR OUR CHILDREN, SO THAT THEY MAY LEARN
AND APPRECIATE OUR CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS, AND ALSO FOR TI-IE
OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS AROUND US, SO THAT THEY MAY IJE AWARE OF
OUR CULTURE THAT CAN STILL BE FOUND TODAY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF
THE ATLANTIC OCEAN IN OUR DEAR COUNTRY OF PORTUGAL AND THE
AZORES ISLANDS.

I WOULD NOW LIKE TO TAKE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MENTION THE
NAMES OF A FEW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOLY GHOST COMMITTEE THAT
WAS IN OFFICE AND MADE THE HOUSING OF THE HOLY GHOST TRANSFORM
FROM A MERE DREAM INTO THE ABSOLUTE REALITY WE SEE HERE TODAY.
AND THESE PEOPLE WERE:

VALQUIRO EIRO, TJIE PRESIDENT
JOSE ANDRADE

ISABEL BARBARA
JOSE M. SILVA
NATALIE FARIA
LEONILDE DUTRA
DAVID ANDRADE
LINO ROCHA
CLAIRE ANDRADE
MANUEL ANDRADE
JAMES PONTES
IIELIO DE MELO

AND ALSO TO ALL THE PAST AND PRESENT COMMITTEES OF THE
HOLY GHOST SOCIETY, AND TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE THAT IN SOME
WAY OR OTHER HELPED CONTRIIJUIE TO MAKING 11-1/S HOLY GI-JOST
HOME A REALITY, TO YOU COMES MUCH THANKS AND APPRECIA11ON
AND GOOD LUCK IN ALL THAT YOU DO FOR 1HE HOLY GHOST.
