The collection focuses on the the Correa family's service in the military, police, and fire departments. Biographical Sketch Manuel Pestena Correa (1897-1975) was born in Graciosa in the Azores to Manuel S. Correa and Mary Genoveia. After coming to the United States as a child in 1904, he enlisted in the military in 1918 and served in the Navy during WWI. He married Mary Picansco in 1923 and they had four children: Anthony, Edward, Daniel, and Georgia. Manuel served for the Lowell Fire Department. Mary Picanso Correa, Manuel's wife, was born in Lowell, MA around 1900 to Antonio and Mary Avila Picanso, who both immigrated from Portugal. Antonio Picanso was well known within the Portuguese community for being one of the founders of St. Anthony's Church. He also served as the Treasurer of the church for many years. Anthony Correa (1927-2018), one of the children mentioned above, was born in Lowell. He served in the Navy in World War II at the age of 17. He served on the U.S.S. Leo and made many landings for the battles on both Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He went on to work for the Lowell Police for 36 years as a motorcycle patrolman. In 1949, Anthony married Mary Canelas, who was born around 1926 in Woburn, MA. Mary's parents both immigrated from Portugal. Daniel Correa (1924-2015), Anthony's brother, was born in Lowell in 1924. He also served in the Navy during World War II. He went on to work for the Lowell Fire Department for 41 years. He worked on Engine #1, Engine #11, and Ladder #1. He married Constance Wilson and served as the manager of the Portuguese American Center in Lowell. Edward Correa, the third son of Manuel and Mary, also served for the Lowell Fire Department. Georgia Correa (1925-2009), the only daugher of Manuel and Mary, had four children of her own.
