Saturday Evening, April 28, 1956 �DEDICATION My dear Friends: I am happy to have the opportunity to convey to the members and friends of the Portuguese-American Civic League of Massachusetts my best wishes for the success of this year's efforts in raising the Scholarship Fund. I am glad, of course, that Ronald Sears, a Lawrence boy, was one of those honored with scholarship aid last year. But my real pleasure comes from reasons much deeper than that. Those who know the history of America realize that our country's greatness has been built upon the contributions of people who immigrated here from many lands. They brought from the old countries the virtues of thrift, honesty, industry, and ambition. Through the universal opportunity of American education they made advancement for their children and for themselves and brought greatness to America. The Portuguese-Americans have had their share in all this. They are honored by all for their attainments in America. Keep up this good work! I know no better way to do it than to encourage the young to go on to college and higher education. The scholarships you give are a great incentive to that end. In this work I wish you success. It will reflect glory on your old country, and it will aid in the building of this beloved land in which all of us have a vital share. JAMES F. The Portuguese colo n y in Lawrence is as old as the city. When , in 1853, the six year old tu,vn received its charter as a city, a Portu guese barber, Andrew Mideros, was already established in a barber shop at the corner of Lawrence a nd Common Street, and lived, with hi s family, at 11 Bradford Street, wbere, in I 856, he paid a tax of .~4 1.02 , at the rate of ::); 7.60 per $ 1,000. The cornerstone of the Portuguese Church of Ss. Peter and Paul was laid on September 30, 1906, with elaborate ceremonies. It was dedicated on .'.ugust 4, 1907. Mr. John B. Buckley MAYOR OF LAWRENCE "The Portuguese-American Civic League demonstrated the ideals, the practices and all the elements which makes for true Americanism. It is only by the constant reiteration of the truth as we Americans conceive the truth to be, that we shall be able to maintain and advance those admirable qual ities of citizenship in keeping with the inherent dignity of man." �LA WREN CE, MASS. The history of our city begins in 1845, when the Essex Company began building the great stone dam across the Merrimack River to make water power. At the same time the Mills were also being constructed along the banks of the river. This community near the dam grew rapidly as people came in great numbers and from various places to work in the building of these projects. The advancement of this community m,a de it different from the quiet neighboring towns of Andover and Methuen and for this reason the Legislature of Massachusetts on April 17, 1847 passed a law incorporating this certain territory into a town and named it "Lawrence." It received its nanie in honor of Abbott Lawrence, who at that time was president of the Essex Company and who had invested mpst of his personal fortune in building the dam and canals which made Lawrence the industrial place it is today. The textile mills have always been the backbone of our cities indu,stry. Even before the city was named some of the mills were in operation . Lawrence has always stood high in the manufacturing of fine worsted cloth and for this it is noted all over the world . Lawrence has many industries as well as individual enterprises - the Champion International Paper Company now known as the Oxford Paper Company makes some of the world's finest coated paper; a number of firms make shoes; several make clothing out of cloth produced here; one makes plastic and rubber articles which are shipped all over the world and many smaller firms make things that are necessary and useful in every part of life. School and education have also played an important role in making Lawrence the thriving community she is today. At one tim~, only five one-room schools were within our cities boundaries - while today we have 22 public schools educating our children to become great leaders for the future . Progress has given Lawrence good schools, modern stores, smprt dress shops, new roads and splendid churches and yet the fu,t ure holds more as new industries are still moving into our fair city. Yes, Lawrence has traveled far - through a great past to a rich present and with the amlbition and integrity of our children today to a prosperous and promising future. �A Summary of the Portuguese Colony of Lawrence and the Ladies' and Men's Councils of the Portuguese-American Civic League of Mass. The Portugu,ese colony in Lawrence is as old as the City. Andrew Mideros, a Portuguese barber, was already established in a barber shop at the corner of Lawrence and Common Streets and lived with his family at 1 Bradford Street in 1853, when this six year old town received its charter as a city. Mr. John B. Sears, known as the father of the Lawrence Councils, organized the local Men's Council in 1930 with headquarters on Corrimon Street. A year later, in 1931, the Ladies' Council was successfully organized. Mr. Sears' and Mr. Gaiolas' advice, experience and active participation in organizational work have been invaluable in promoting friendship, education, unity and social welfare amongst our people. As a non-partisan civic association, our main activities include taking part in all civic affairs of the community, state and nation and promoting interest in American naturalization. The league is proud of its scholarship fuind which is supported through per capita fees and the annual ball. Four scholarships are awarded annually through a competitive examination. The Ladies' and Men's Councils take great pride in their welfare board which consists of ten members, appointed annually by the presidents. The purpose of thi s board is to aid the needy, guide and advise the nevv< comers to our country from Portugal and its Island s, and, in general, to help any one in any way possible. In 1948 a blood bank was organized which is available to all mlerribers and their families. The names, blood type, and telephone numbers of the donors are posted in the club halls. The local councils are proud of its Junior Girls baton and drill teams and the Junior Boys Drum Corps they have had throughout the years. They have progressed rapidly under the supervision of Herman Espinola, chairman, assisted by iMrs. Flora Silva, Mrs. Theresa Campisi, Thomas Sousa, and Manuel Sousa. Mr . Father Edward J. Carney, Pastor Our Church, SS Peter & Paul, had its beginning back in 1905, when it was organized by the Late Very Rev. James T. O'Reilly, O.S.A. , then pastor of Saint Mary's parish . It was due to the increasing population of Portuguese residents here that Father O'Reilly realized th e ne cessity of a church and priest to minister our needs. Our people attended services in the old Saint Mary's Church , which is now the site of Saint Mary's Auditorium from 1905 to 1907 while SS Peter & Paul Church was under construction . The cornerstone of the new edifice was laid Septemper 30, 1906 by the Late William Cardinal O'Connell and on August 4, 1907 our church was dedicated. The first pastor of our church was Rev. Paul Despouy, who remf!ined as pastor for about eight years. During his pastorate he built the parish house next to the church. As the years gradually passed, we had a total of thirteen pastors and then on September 8, 1956, Father Mccusker, who is still in charge was assigned as priest in charge of our little church. The first couple married after the church was organized in 1905, were Anthony E. Mendonca and Ann Perpetua; and the first boy and girl baptized were Charles Pereira and Mary Motta. Prince Henry could be called the m·an who unlocked the door to the wide field of ocean study. It is not often realized the importance that he played in the progress and development of the world. He served as an ,inspiration to others with his great maritim e discoveries and was chiefly responsible for the linking of the unknow"n world to the known world in the 15th and 16th centuries. Among many of his great missions was the rediscovery and colonization of Madeira in 1416 and the Azores in 1427. Expeditions grew in im:petus the following years and even after his death the Far East and the entire coast of Brazil had been reached and explored. From his great inspiration many Portuguese navigators, such as Magel Ian, helped other countries in their expeditions. It is to these great seamen, Vasco da Gama, Cabral, Dias, and many others, that we owe our vast progress in ocean navigation - the development of the great sailing. vessels of today, the discovery of the importance of nautical charts and methods of navigational direction end coast line study. It was recently stated by Professor Garrett Mattingly, a Pulitzer Prize author, that the modern world did not begin with Columbus, but actually began with the e<Jrlier voyages of Prince Henry. Henry was also responsible for the originating· of the caravel a three-masted sailing vessel without which the far-reaching expeditions of that time would not have been accomplished . Because of his desire to explore further, he needed a ship which would be able to cope with the sea and wind much more effectively than the vessels of his time. But the caravel 's importance and popularity only lasted 50 years. It was found that a much heavier vessel of about 400 tons was needed to carry heavy cargo and to be able to cope with the ruggedness of the sea. This was called the nau and was used in Vasco da Gama's voy•a ge to India in 1497. The Portuguese Navy will celebrate this anniversary commemoration by paying homage to Prince Henry and the other great sean,en of Portugal. Celebrations have already been initiated in the United States with a Te Deum in the Church of the Five Wounds in San Jose, California. In New Bedford, Massachusetts, masses in 4 churches began the commemoration on March 27. We can sum( up the greatness of this man in the Words of George E. Solosky, famed news columnist: "Henry the Navigator was a scientist rather than a politician. His services to mankind were greatest in the fields of navigation and astronomy. When, in 1853, the six year old town received its charter as a city, a Portuguese barber, Andrew Mideros, was already established in a barber shop at the corner of Lawrence and Common Street, and lived, with his family, at 11 Bradford Street, wher,e, in 1856, he paid a tax of $41.02, at the rate of $7.60 per $1 ,000. Lawrence at the time had a population of about 16,000, and, with the exception of a few Germans, the residents of the city were of English, Irish and Scotch extraction. The Portuguese have the distinc tion of 1 eading all the other European groups to this community at that time. The cornerstone of the Portuguese Church of Sts. Peter and Paul was laid on September 30, 1906 , with elaborate ceremonies. It was dedicated on August 4. 1907. During the year 1930, MesfSrS. Joseph P. Portuguese-A mericans, Portuguese Clubs and Societ;,es, and under the direction 0£ Mr. Sears, now known as the Father of the Lawrence Councils the PortugueseAmerican Civic Association was organized in 1930. ' A year later in 1931, the, Ladies' Council was organized, and we are proud of the fa_c~ that we were one of the six councils to have organized the Portuguese-A merican C1v1c League of Massa.chusett s which number twenty-seven councils throughout the state today. . The La~rence councils took the initiative in organizing the Junior Boys' and Girls' Councils, a Junior Boys' Fife and Drum Corps, a_ .hmior Girls' Baton Team, and a Portugu_ese sch?ol, and has progressed rapidly sinc,e its beginning, starting with a membership of thirty and increasing to over five hundred including the Ladies', Men's, Junior Girls' and Boys' Councils.· · · · · · ' · · Ou~ main activ/ties are in t aking part in all civic affairs of the community, state and _nation, p~omotmg interest in American naturalization amongst our people, conductmg a Christmas basket fund for the needy and other charitable affairs. . Mr. Manuel Sears was elected the first president of the Lawrence Men's Council m 1931; followed by Clarence Andrews, 1932; Fred Couto, 1933-34; Jeffrey Vasconcelos, 1935-36; Manuel Sousa, Jr. 1937 · and Manuel Sears 1938. Jessie Espinola 'was the first president 'elected in the Lawrence Ladies' Council m the year 1932, she also serv·e d in 1933-34, followed by Mrs. Elsie Foley, 1935-36; Mrs. Jessie Espinola, 1937 ; and Miss Ezilda Cardoza, 1938.
