Durante este periodo de tempo ou seja de 1905 a 1907 os portugueses iam 1 missa lgreja de Santa Maria, t a mbe'm durante o periodo de 1905 a 1906 e tal como em todas as co isas das nossas comunidades, come_s:ou a haver uma diferenc,a de ,opinioes entre _diversos memb~os da nossa comu n1dade acerca do nome que se 1ria dar a 1greJa que se 1a constru 1r; pois uns queriam que o patrono fosse Santo Antonio, outros Sao Francisco etc., entao o Bispo da area acabou com a questao e decidiu que a primeira pedra fosse lan9ada no dia de S. Pedro e S. Paulo, e assim aconteceu, no dia 30 de Setembro de 1906, o Cardeal William O'Connell a convite do Bispo e dos paroquianos portugueses veio ate Lawrence e lan9ou a primeira pedra da nossa lgreja estava assim iniciada a constru 1ao da lgreja Portuguesa de Lawrence, neste mesmo dia v!rias pessoas deram as suas semanas de trabalho para ajuda da construflo da mesma, as quais eram entre os $4.00 e os $5.22, esta Jitima quantia na altura era considerada como uma grande semana de trabalho; continuando a Tia Francisca disse-nos que se juntou $300.00 naquelo mesmo dia, quantia esta recorde, antes nunca haviam angariado tanto dinheiro duma vez. A constru 1ao da nossa lgreja durou pouco menos de um ano, e no dia 4 de Agosto de 1907 foi a sua inauguar~~ao com a qua! todos os Portugueses de Lawrence se sentiram orgulhosos com a magnifica obra que eles e apenas e les unidos conseguiram levar a cabo com muito trabalho e sacri ficio, juntando-se em grupos todos os dias 'a noite depois das 12 horas de trabalho, iam trabalhar mais 3 e 4 horas na constru9ao da obra dos seus sonhos. Apos esta grandiosa obra, o Padre Paul Despouy primeiro padre da nossa lg reja, decidiu construir a residincia paroquial, e uma vez mais a nossa gente arrega5aram as mangas e puseram maos obra, e poucos meses depois viram outra grandiosa obra rea lizada, pelos seus propdos meios, Uma vez a casa concluida o Padre P,iul foi residir ne la e la viveu durante 8 anos, tendo sido o primeiro e 'unico Padre a viver na residencia paroquial. A maneira qu e os anos iam decor rendo, a nossa gente muito unida e com muito entusiasmo e alegria, iam fazendo as suas festas, fazendo igualmente uma pe9a de teatro muito bonita, que deliciou o grandioso numero de espectadores que se deslocaram ao sa lao da nossa igreja para aver. A pe1a chamava-se "MAR IA DESG RA~ADA", papel este desenpenhado pela Tia Francisca, que num dos seus actos tinha que tirar um dente, e o senhor Ciriaco de Sousa fazia o papel de dentista, nas suas palavras foi uma pe9a muito alegre e bonita, hoje nao fazem nada disso, so o que fazem e' falar do que os nossos fizeram, e quedevia-se fazer isso e aquilo, mas sabes uma coisa nao com conversas que se fazem as coisas e' com mu ito trabalho e vontade; com palavras nao se vai la, eu ca sou uma tola ja trabalho para a lgreja desde 1924, se nao fosse eu a fazer este trabalho ninguem o fazia mas esta bem born, tambem ja estou uma ve lha, nao posse fazer mais nada. Olha sabes foi eu que pedi din-heiro para aquele oratorio, enfim para tudo isto que esta aqui nesta igreja, senao talvez hoje nao tivesse-mos o que temos, e sabes uma coi sa toda a gente ajudava. Do matrimonio da Tia Francisca, nasceram-lhe quatro filhos, dois dos quai s ja fa lecidos, a filh a mais velha conta 74 anos de idade e reside em New Bedford. I . . / ..., . que a 1am mandar para traz para a Grac1osa, como Ja bastava de separa9oes, nao queria uma vez mais separar-me da minha familia, e tambe'm nao que ri a ir para traz para a Graciosa. Fui entao tirar os papeis Americanos e nao me custou nada, foi bem facil, mas segundo ela diz que continuou e continua a sentir-se sempre bem Portuguesa, e apesar da sua vida nao ter sido muito de gabar, gosta muito de estar na Ame'rica, aonde ja vive a 80 anos. PEDRO ~ E SAO PAULO DESDE 1924 so Francisca da Conceis;ao Medina, hoje mais conhecida por Francisca Si lva nasceu no d ia 10 de Junho de 1890, na llha da Graciosa nos A~ores. A tia Francisca desde a sua inf3ncia foi se mpre muito dedicada ao trabalho, pois contava apenas 8 anos de idade e ja trabalhava bastante, carregando com molhos de lenha desde o sitio da caldeira da Graciosa ate~ sua casa len ha esta bast ante essencial para a cozedura do pao que a sua mae cozia no se u forno de tijolos, os qua is hoje em dia nos A1ores ja sao uma raridade. Ainda com os seus oito anos, a mae em virtude de certas dificuldades financeiras com que muitas das nossas gentes se debatiam, deixou-a ir para a !Iha do Faial para casa du ns padrinhos ora residindo naquela !Iha, que dista de uma dist1ncia de cerca de 45 milhas na6ticas, travessia esta que se fazia apenas de barco com uma dura9ao de cerca de sete horas. Esta despedida, segundo nos d isse a Tia Francisca, jamais foi e sera' esquecida. No dia- da partida ela agarrou-se as saias da mae a c horar e a bater com os p/s no chao que nao a queria deixar de manei ra alguma para ir para o Fa ial, mas quando a mae lhe disse;-esta bem ficas ca mas muita lenha tens de carregar da Caldeira. Com esta exclamas;ao da mae a Tia Francisca rapidamente decidi u fazer a viagem para o Fa ial, que segundo ela, seria melhor que anda r a ca rrega r lenha o que ela nao gostava nada, pois muito penava com os molhos cabes;a. Apcfs esta separa 7ao da mae a que foi obrigada (disse-nos a chorar), foi andar o resto da sua vida sempre separada, e quando tinha 12 anos de idade teve que tomar novos ru mos, mas desta feita o seu destino era a America , no dia 2 de Agosto de 1902 partiu da Cidade de Angra do Heroismo, na IIha Terceira num navio chamado "DONA MARIA", que levou 10 dias achegar a Ame'rica, chegando no dia 12 de Agosto de 1902. Uma vez chegada a America o seu destino estava tra9ado "TRABA LHO", mas para tal teve que ment1r na 1dade e no nome, passou-se a chama r "MAR IA", e assim foi ate'aos 16 anos, idade com que veio a casar e pela prilJleira vez na Ame'rica come1ou a usar o seu nome de bapt1smo, d1zendo ter sido um alivio em deixar de ser Maria, ao qua I nunca se adaptou mu ito bem. Ainda como Maria trabalhava numa fabrica de algodao a varrer das 6:30 da manna ate as 6:00 da tarde, ganhando $4.30 por semana. Uma semana trabalhou over-time todos os dias e co nsegui atingir o ma'ximo de pagamento que era permitido na altura, fazendo $12.00, das quais deu $6.00 para a lgreja, a qual estava em constru,;o. FATHER REINALDO MATOS PASTOR Our Church, SS. Peter & Paul, had its beginning back in 1905, when the late Very Rev. James T. O'Reilly, O.S.A., was the pastor of Saint Mary's parish. It was due to the increasing population of Portuguese residents here that Father O'Reilly realized the necessity of a church and priest to minister our needs. Our people attended services in the old Saint Mary's Church, which is now the site of Saint Mary's Auditorium, from 1905 to 1907, while SS. Peter & Paul Church was under construction. The cornerstone of the new edifice was laid September 30, 1906, by the late William Cardinal O'Connell, and on August 4, 1907, our church was dedicated. The first priest of our church was Rev. Paul Despouy, who remained as a pastor for about eight years. During his pastorate he built the parish house next to the church. As the years gradually passed, we had a total of sixteen priests, including Rev. John J. Lamond, succeeded by our present pastor, Rev. Father Reinaldo Matos. The first couple married, after the church was dedicated in 1907, were John Cardoso and Jacinta Sousa. The first boy and girl baptized were Frank Rodrigues and Olive Damaso.
