Description
An account of the resource
During the summer of 1989, the Camara Family donated a collection of glass plate negatives to UMass Lowell Libraries Center for Lowell History. These negatives record life in the Portuguese Community of greater Lowell, circa 1920-1925. The identities of the people in the photographs remain a mystery; it is believed that they depict members of the Portuguese community who came to Lowell from the Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde, and continental Portugal. Like many immigrants to Lowell, the Portuguese came looking for jobs. They found employment in the textile mills, foundries and tanneries. The photographs show this immigrant community at work and at play.

Finding Aid for the Camara Collection

Content warning: This collection contains post-mortem photographic images, specifically images of babies who are no longer alive. The practice of taking images of family members who have died was a cultural practice of the time but it may be distressing to users.
