<text>The Januario Leal Video collection covers events related to the Portuguese community from many towns within the Greater Boston area from the 1970s to 2000. The videos linked here focus on the communities north and northwest of Boston, however many more videos can be found on the LealVideos Youtube page, including videos filmed in the Azores. The videos in this collection include many events, festivals, processions, and Carnaval celebrations.

This collection is still growing. Check back for updates!

Biographical Note
Januario L. Leal was born on October 15, 1946, in São Bras, Terceira to Januario and Maria (Linhares) Leal. He grew up attending school and, as an adult, operated his father’s convenience store.

In 1970, Januario relocated to the United States with his wife, Fernanda (DeSousa) Leal, and they settled in Lowell, Massachusetts. He became a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of many local clubs including the Portuguese American Civic League, the Portuguese American Center, and the Holy Ghost Society. After immigrating to Lowell, he worked at Paris Shoe as a machine operator until 1978. He later began working for Bradford Industries, formerly known as Pandel, as an inspector until his retirement.

Januario was also an avid videographer and maintained his own YouTube channel called "Leal Videos." In 1972 Januario's first video camera was a Super 8mm. The Super 8 used 50ft film roll cassettes which only provided 3 minutes of video recording. As video camera technology advanced he later upgraded 3 years later in 1975 to 16mm film. The Super 8 and 16mm cameras that Januario owned were hand-cranked at first but later upgraded to battery powered a couple years later. As Januario continued to follow his passion he upgraded his camera with each video camera technology advancements which included the video formats of VHS (1980-1999), MiniDV (2000-2015) and to the modern day High Definition 1080p (2015-2022). He recorded hundreds of local events related to the Portuguese community, including many processions and festivals. Thanks to his videography passion, an entire generation of Portuguese American festivities will now be preserved for posterity.

Januario passed away on February 28, 2022 and is survived by his four children (Roberta Agostinho, Alizabete Brum, Davido Leal, and Roberto Leal) and their families, including many grandchildren.</text>

                  <text>
This collection includes letters and other related items surrounding the life and history of Bishop Henrique José Reed da Silva (1854-1930), the titular Bishop of Trajanopolis and Bishop Emeritus of São Tomé de Meliapor who was also a pastor for Saint Anthony's Church in Lowell for 13 years (1911-1924). These documents and records were scanned and donated by the Arquivo Histórico do Patriarcado de Lisboa (AHPL), where the physical collection remains. These records cover an international purview of Portuguese and Portuguese American history through the lens of Bishop da Silva's life and travels. Here, you will find papers created by or about Bishop da Silva, as well as a group of letters sent to Bishop da Silva over the course of his life from family members, political figures and leaders, titled officials of the Catholic Church, and other members of the Catholic Church and Portuguese communities all over the world.

Bibliographical Note
Biography written and provided by the Arquivo Histórico do Patriarcado de Lisboa. Translation and small edits made by the PADA archivist. Additions in brackets.

Bishop Henrique José Reed da Silva was born in Lisbon to Sebastião José da Silva and Elisa Maria Reed da Silva on January 19th, 1854. He was baptized on February 5th, 1854 in Lisbon's Santa Isabel parish.

He attended the College of Overseas Missions in Cernache do Bonjardim. Destined for an ecclesiastical life, Bishop da Silva was ordained and, after taking the Order of the Presbyte in 1879, he left for Luanda the following year to become the secretary for the Bishop of Angola and Congo, Dom José Sebastião Neto. In this bishopric, he served as the parson of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Parish, as a chaplain for a hospital, and as a professor of humanities for the seminary. In 1881, he assumed the position of general vicar and, in 1882, he took charge of the diocesan government for a period. He also became the precentor of the See, and in 1883, attained the position of Vicar Capitular.

Named the prelate of Mozambique on March 6th 1884, Bishop da Silva would eventually be elevated to the Titular Bishop of Philadelphia [of Arabia] in the consistory on the 27th of that same month. The episcopal congregation took place in the Church of Santa Catarina in Lisbon [also referred to as the Church of the Convent of Paulistas] on May 4th at the hand of the Bishop of Portalegre, Dom José Maria da Silva Ferrão de Carvalho Martens. This title was made effective upon Bishop da Silva's formal entrance into Mozambique on January 1st of 1885. He was placed in charge of the government of the province and, in October, he organized the activity for the pastoral visit—having, at that time, toured Kenya and the archipelago of Tanzania.

In the apostolic brief from December 1st of that year, Bishop da Silva was dismissed from the prefecture of Mozambique and named the coadjutor of the Archbishop of Goa, primate of the East.

On November 25th of 1886, Bishop da Silva was named the Bishop of São Tomé de Meliapor [Mylapore] in India, and he was preconized by the Pope on March 14th of that following year. During his decade-long episcopate, he created two newspapers, established a diocese seminary, maintained a high school in Calcutta with a boarding school for girls and another that provided entry to the university, established orphanages and nursing homes for the elderly, founded a pharmaceutical laboratory that provided treatment to those in need, and ordered the construction of a neo-Gothic cathedral.

Bishop da Silva turned in the miter of Mylapore in 1897 and, subsequently, the Holy See granted Bishop da Silva the title of Bishop of Trajanopolis in Phrygia in 1898. From 1907 to 1909, Bishop da Silva traveled to California, exercising his ministry among Portuguese communities. He visited Hawaii in 1908 and in 1910, continued [his travels] on to Mexico. However, it was in the year 1911 that he settled in Lowell, Massachusetts, within the archdiocese of Boston, to administer the Saint Anthony Church of the Portuguese, remaining there until 1924.

He returned to Portugal in 1925, after a stay in Canada and in New York where, for health reasons, he was hospitalized in Saint Vincent’s Hospital. Afterwards, he traveled to the Eternal City [Rome] and, five years later, on October 6th of 1930, Henrique José Reed da Silva—the titular Bishop of Trajanopolis and Bishop Emeritus of São Tomé de Meliapor—passed away in Lisbon, where his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery of Prazeres in a tomb gifted by the Third Order of Saint Francis.
</text>

He mentions the hundreds of visitors that are in Washington, coming from all over the United States. He wishes that Bishop da Silva had been present and hopes to receive a photograph of him. He then discusses his classes and his success in different subjects. Beehan emphasizes that the Bishop is present in his prayers and thanks him for giving him a memento in his daily Eucharists. <text>
This collection focuses on Maria de Lourdes Serpa's involvement with the Portuguese youth movement in Lowell, Massachuetts, in the 1970s. Items include a transcript from the local youth radio program (Ecos da Juventude), issues of the youth-written newsletter (Um Jornal da Juventude), and photos of members of the youth group itself (Juventude em Marcha).

Biographical Note:

Maria de Lourdes (Brasil) Serpa is a Professor Emerita at Lesley University and has specialized in bilingual education throughout her career. She has designed Master’s programs and doctoral specializations in Bilingual-ESL Special Education and served as director and co-director of two major 5-year education projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education. She has dedicated her time to serving bilingual education in Massachusetts, serving on several committees of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Maria de Lourdes was born in São Jorge, an island in the Azores. Her father, Abel V. Brasil (1922-2005), and her mother, Maria de Lourdes Brasil (1923-1994), were also born on the island of São Jorge. They immigrated to the United States on July 4, 1969, and settled in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Soon after arriving, Maria de Lourdes and two of her siblings, Lasalette and Joe, quickly got involved with the local Portuguese American community in Lowell. In 1970, she started the Saint Anthony’s Portuguese Choir, which was the first choir at Saint Anthony’s Church. Mary Lou Silva served as the organist and Joe Brasil was the guitar player. During this time, in 1970-1971, Maria and other young people began meeting about starting a youth group, eventually named “Juventude Em Marcha”. The official co-founders of the group were Dimas Espinola and Lasalette Brasil. Maria de Lourdes wrote the first draft of the constitution in 1971 before having it approved by all group members. Saint Anthony’s priest at the time, Fr. Silva, supported this venture.

These discussions occurred at the same time as two other youth group projects: “Ecos da Juventude”, a local radio program created for Portuguese youth, and “Um Jornal da Juventude”, a newsletter dedicated to youth issues. “Ecos da Juventude” was run by a team made up of Maria de Lourdes, Dimas Espinola, Joe Brasil, Lasalette Brasil, and Conceicao Cipriano (serving as the Youth Group Secretary). “Um Jornal da Juventude” was edited by Lasalette Brasil, but was a collaboration between multiple members of the Youth Group. It was copied and assembled in Saint Anthony’s parish house and distributed once a month at mass.
</text>

                  <text>

</text>

qu e, se lhe acontecesse ter-se-ia tornado outra ••• a vida teria um signifido diferente, mais compl et o , mais belo •.• E o cora9io lhe teria bartido
continuamente, tambem quando vendia
sapatos teria continuado a pensar no
seu "amor"... Quan do a freguesa.-sailJ.,
Antonieta perguntou a Helena:
- Estas certa de que, esta tarde,
conseguiras dizer "adeus" ao Nelson?
A outra soprou forte:
- Oh, a falar verdade ••• pode muito bem acontecer que me falte a coragem •••
- E entao?
- Entao, ent~o! - Helena moveu as
maos, inquieta. Depots fixou Antonieta e deu um pequeno grito:
- Ehi, Antonieta! Porque nao vais
tu a ter com o Nelson?
- Eu? ••. ir ter com Nelson?
A surpresa da pequena empregada
foi fort!ssima. Deixou-se cair numa
cadeira.
- Nao per~as os sentidos, por favor! - riu-se Helena. Mas a ideia
tinha entrado na cabe9a e achava-se
maravilhosa.
- Calma, Antonieta, acalma e ouve .•.
- disse, ficando de
em frente da
amiga. - Tu Is uma boa rapariga.
Nelson causa-te do, nao e verdade?
Parece-te uma crueldade, sim ou nao,
eu dizer-lhe em poucas palavras para
desaparecer para sempre?! ••• Sabes
tambem tu, que tipo e~ o Nelson. E
tao sensivel, impressionavel - chega
mesmo a sentir-se mal .••
- Oh, Helena, nao brinques, por favor! - gemeu Antonieta.

tarde •.. Era um tipo assim: desejoso
de afecto, de companhia, de compreensao ••• e aquela fragil rapariga de
cabelos e olhos escuros pareceu-lhe a
enquanto acendia o cigarro.
Antonieta sentiu o cora9ao bater-lhe dentro:
..,J
- Oh ••• sim.•• isto e, nao •.• mesmo doente nao ••• mas •••
0 jovem parou. Fixou a cara de Antonieta que era toda uma chama.
- Perque queres dizer uma mentira?
- saiu-se com do9ura.

Ela experimentou uma especie de
vertigens:
- Disse-lhe Helena? - balbuciou
baixinho.

                  <text>

</text>

                  <text>

</text>

                  <text>

</text>
