<text>The Januario Leal Photography collection contains pictures related to the Portuguese community within Lowell from the 1970s to 2000. The photographs in this collection include snapshots of festivals, festas and processions, Carnaval celebrations, memorable events in Back Central, and photographs of Januario Leal himself—including photographs of his personal studio.

Photographs donated with this collection that were taken after 2000 or fall outside of PADA's usual collection scope have been digitally preserved by the PADA archivists and are available for research or viewing purposes upon request.

This collection is still growing. Check back for updates!

Content warning: This collection contains photographic images of Mantança do Porco events, which is a Portuguese tradition that involves slaughtering and butchering a pig. No images include blood or excessive gore, but may still be distressing to users.

Biographical Note
Januario L. Leal was born on October 15, 1946, in São Bras, Terceira to Januario and Maria (Linhares) Leal. He grew up attending school and, as an adult, operated his father’s convenience store.

In 1970, Januario relocated to the United States with his wife, Fernanda (DeSousa) Leal, and they settled in Lowell, Massachusetts. He became a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of many local clubs including the Portuguese American Civic League, the Portuguese American Center, and the Holy Ghost Society. After immigrating to Lowell, he worked at Paris Shoe as a machine operator until 1978. He later began working for Bradford Industries, formerly known as Pandel, as an inspector until his retirement.

In addition to being an avid videographer, Januario was also an active photographer, capturing events such as Carnaval celebrations, cantoria performances, Portuguese festas and festivals, general scenes and events around the Back Central neighborhood, and other moments related to the Portuguese community of Lowell. He captured hundreds of photographs of local community members and Portuguese culture, and thanks to his passion for both videography and photography, memories and traditions from the Portuguese American community in Lowell will now be preserved for the next generations to see.

Januario passed away on February 28, 2022 and is survived by his four children—Roberta Agostinho, Alizabete Brum, Davido Leal, and Roberto Leal—and their families, including many grandchildren.</text>

The founding members were Antonio Chaves, Domingos S. Conde, Mateus S. Luz, Manuel S. Silva, John S. Sousa, Frank Aguiar. Manuel Matz, Manuel S. Conde, Manuel Aguiar, John S. Mathias, Jose S. Silva, Manuel M. Mello, John Leal and Manuel Sylvester.

Today, the Portuguese Benefit Society remains a focal point of Peabody's Portuguese community.
