After the parade, the organizer of the event gives a speech about the raising of the flag, and then a priest speaks about the history and religious implications of the event. The group then has a moment of silence for Humberto Correia, a well-known Portuguese advocate in Lowell. The flag is raised, and then Lowell Councilor Caulfield, Councilor Matt Donahue, Councilor Mulligan, and Representative Thomas Golden are introduced before Councilor Laurie Machado gives a speech about the history of Portuguese immigration and the Portuguese community in Lowell. One final speaker makes a speech about the legacy of the Portuguese community, and the Rancho Folclórico Juventude Unida de Lowell is initiated begins a dance performance. The video begins with several scenic shots of Portuguese landscapes and towns, and then transitions into a dance number performed by several women with balloons. People are then shown preparing for the parade on the streets of Lowell, including the Rainhas de São João and the Concorentes de São João, and groups of men play music with guitars. Participants are dressed in an array of traditional clothing and carry different types of food, including fruit, pastries, and cheese. Oxen drive some of the parade floats and others are motorized, showcasing Portuguese culture and history. Some members of the parade are seen playing and singing music in bands or small groups. Several folclórico dance troupes also showcase traditional dances, like the Ramos de Oliveira Folclórico group. Other Portuguese community groups can be seen marching with banners, such as the União Portuguesa Beneficente women's soccer team. It has only been in existence for two years, and has already had an international presence, the Rancho Folclorico de Santo Antonio in the city of Lowell, in the State of Massachuetts, respectively; in Canada, in Montreal and Quebec, and also at the Boston international festival, "Noite de Portugal". This rancho was born, on the initiative of two young women, named Maria de Fatima Silva and Maria Guadalupe Espinola, aged 13 and 15 respectively, who also chose the remaining members that make up the group.
Azorean folklore has a strong influence in this group, from costumes to dances and songs, it demonstrates the desire to distinguish its components, and greatly honors the Azorean people. They place great value in the work of rehearsing, and another young man with ideas and spirit, Henry T. de Sousa, also an Azorean native, who is in the photo (on the right) along with the other members.
