Description
An account of the resource
This collection of items come from the Archives held at Saint Anthony's Church in Lowell, MA. These items are kept in the Rectory and were organized by PADA archivists in 2021.<br /><br /><strong>Biographical Overview:</strong>
<p><span>For over two decades beginning in the 1870s, when Portuguese immigration to Lowell began to rise, most of the city’s Portuguese Catholics worshipped at St. Peter’s Church, a largely Irish and Irish-American parish. By the late 1890s the pastor of St. Peter’s arranged for Rev. Antonio J. Pimentel, of Boston and originally from Terceira in the Azores, to hold services for the Portuguese in a hall across the street from the church. With the Portuguese population approaching 1,000, a number of influential community members, notably Manuel P. Mello (1867-1938), from Graciosa, sought to establish their own parish. Rev. John Joseph Williams, Archbishop of Boston, supported this effort. Aided by Rev. Pimentel, Mello formed a committee, and, in 1900, began raising money for a church. One year later the committee had collected sufficient funds to purchase the abandoned Primitive Methodist Church, a wood-frame building on Gorham Street, built thirty years earlier. Dedicated on May 19, 1901, St. Anthony’s Church opened with Rev. Manuel C. Terra, the well-known pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Provincetown, celebrating the first High Mass with several hundred parishioners in attendance.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In early 1902, Archbishop Williams appointed Joaquim V. Rosa as pastor at St. Anthony’s. Born on the island of Pico, Joaquim Vieira da Rosa (1872-1964) immigrated to the United States in 1896 and for several years he assisted the pastor at St. John’s Church in New Bedford. Rev. Rosa celebrated his first Mass at St. Anthony’s in January, 1902. </span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>Soon after taking charge of St. Anthony’s, Rev. Rosa established or supported the creation of a number of parish organizations. This included the long-lived Holy Rosary Sodality and the Holy Ghost Society. In addition to his clerical duties, he also led numerous fund-raising programs. Father Rosa also ministered to Lawrence’s Portuguese and helped found that city’s Portuguese Catholic Church. </span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In 1904, Archbishop Williams assigned Rev. Paul L. Despouy to assist Father Rosa at St. Anthony’s and to lead in establishing a Portuguese parish in Lawrence. At the same time Lowell’s growing number of Portuguese parishioners strained the capacity of the old wooden structure on Gorham Street and the search for a new church began. Once again, Manuel P. Mello played a major role in raising funds. Within two years, he and other parishioners had collected enough money to acquire land on Central Street across from the Lyon Street public school. </span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>With the purchase of property, Boston-based architect Timothy Edward Sheehan (1866-1933), designer of a number churches for the Archdiocese, executed the design of the new St. Anthony’s. On Thanksgiving Day, 1907, Archbishop William O’Connell presided over the dedication of the laying of the cornerstone.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In 1908, with construction funds fully expended, only the granite walls and the floor of the basement were completed, and a flat roof was installed over the largely subterranean structure. Nevertheless, in May Father Rosa then celebrated the first Solemn High Mass. Joining him was Father Pimentel, who now led St. Anthony’s parish in Cambridge, Father Despouy, from his mission in Lawrence, and Rev. Manuel C. Terra of Provincetown. Although the rectory next to the church was finished and occupied by Father Rosa in 1908, funds to complete the construction of the highly ornate Mission-style church, following the original architectural design, remained insufficient. For the next 50 years, services continued to be held in the basement structure.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In 1911 Rev. Rosa, suffering from poor health and fatigue, due in part to his strenuous duties in leading his parishioners, resigned his pastorate and returned to his native Pico. In an action that proved especially fortuitous for the parish Archbishop O’Connell appointed Bishop Henrique Jose Reed da Silva (1854-1930) to lead St. Anthony’s. Bishop da Silva’s life prior to his arrival in Lowell was quite unique.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>Born in Lisbon, where he was educated and ordained a priest in 1879, the charismatic Bishop da Silva, fluent in several languages and a sacred music scholar who possessed a fine musical voice, quickly caught the attention of the Bishop of Portalegre, </span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jos%C3%A9_Maria_da_Silva_Ferr%C3%A3o_de_Carvalho_M%C3%A1rtens&action=edit&redlink=1"><span>José Maria da Silva Ferrão de Carvalho Mártens</span></a><span>. In 1884, shortly after turning 30, Rev. da Silva was appointed the prelate of Mozambique and moved to Maputo. Upon his ordination as a bishop, he assumed control of the Maputo archdiocese. Three years later Bishop da Silva took charge of the Diocese of São Tomé of Meliapore in southern India.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>During the bishop’s mission, the assassination of Portugal’s King Carlos and his son, followed by the Republican revolution in 1910, resulted in Bishop da Silva becoming an expatriate. By 1911 he returned to Boston from California and accepted Archbishop O’Connell’s offer to serve as pastor at St. Anthony’s.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In 1916 the bishop was joined by an assistant pastor, Rev. John S. Perry from St. Peter’s Church in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Father Perry, of Azorean parentage and born in Rhode Island in 1874, quickly formed a close working relationship with the bishop. Although in good health at age 62, Bishop da Silva relied heavily on Rev. Perry for regular sacramental duties and to lead the church during his frequent absences due to his duties on behalf of Cardinal O’Connell.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In 1924, after being away from his native Portugal for nearly 18 years, and having reached the age of 70, Bishop da Silva quietly decided to retire from St. Anthony’s, return home, and live the remainder of his days in his beloved Lisbon. In his place, Cardinal O’Connell named Rev. Joseph T. Grillo (1885-1948) as pastor of St. Anthony’s. Born on the island of </span><span>São Miguel Father </span><span>Grillo immigrated to the United States in 1899, settling in Hudson, Massachusetts.</span></p>
<p><span>Under Rev. Grillo’s leadership, several affiliated organizations were revitalized. This included the Vincent de Paul Society, the Holy Name Society, and the Holy Rosary and Young Ladies sodalities. He undertook the first significant renovation of the church, overseeing the installation of a terrazzo floor, a new brighter sanctuary, complete with new statuary. Father Grillo also re-established the annual day-long picnic for parishioners and their families. In addition, he promoted various church-sponsored athletic programs and teams ranging from soccer, baseball, and basketball to track and field, along with a fife and drum corps. He also intensified various fund raising initiatives including the popular penny sales.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>Throughout much of his pastorate, Father Grillo had no assistant pastor except for one year in the early 1930s when Rev. </span><span>Theophilo Pedro Damiao de Oliveira, from São Miguel served in this role. Finally, in early 1937, in recognition of his devotion and many contributions to St. Anthony’s parish, Rev. Grillo was named permanent pastor by Cardinal O’Connell. During the Second World War, Father Grillo was among Lowell’s leading clergymen heading the War Fund Drive. He was also instrumental in establishing a memorial in 1943 for Private Charles Perry (Carlos Pereira), who was killed in North Africa the previous year and was the first Portuguese-American serviceman from Lowell to give his life for the nation.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In the years after World War II, Father Grillo suffered from poor health that resulted in lengthy hospital stays. In his absence, priests at St. Peter’s, who were Irish-American and spoke no Portuguese, filled in for him. Likely aware of the language difficulties this presented to his parishioners, Father Grillo contacted Bishop Giuseppe Alves Matoso of Guarda, Portugal, and requested that he send priests to New England. The Boston Archdiocese supported this initiative and in March 1947, Rev. João F. da Silva, (anglicized to John F. Silva), arrived in Lowell from Portugal to assist Father Grillo. Within a few months another priest from Portugal, Rev. Manuel J. Cascais, joined Father Silva as a second assistant pastor.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>A few months after celebrating his 25 years in the priesthood, Father Grillo’s health worsened and in November, 1948, he died at the age of 63. </span><span>Rev. John F. Silva succeeded him and began a 30-year tenure as pastor at St. Anthony’s. While Father Grillo led St. Anthony’s parish through the hard times of the Great Depression and during the difficult years of World War II, Rev. Silva assumed control of the church during a period of prosperity for many of his parishioners. In 1958, over a 1,000 attended the 50th anniversary of the church on Central Street. Held at the Lowell Auditorium, the celebration featured speeches by Senator John F. Kennedy and Representative Edith Nourse Rogers. The most significant physical change occurred in 1960 when the superstructure of the church was finally constructed. Boston architect Mario V. Caputo produced the design for St. Anthony’s modeled after a church in Colombia.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>During Father Silva’s pastorate, a number of priests assisted him, including Rev. Joseph L. Capote (1949 to 1950) and Rev. Antonio Pinto (1952 to 1954). In late 1972, Rev. Eusebio Silva, a cousin of Father Silva, arrived from Portugal to serve as his assistant. Father John Silva successfully led opposition to a proposed extension of the Lowell Connector highway that would have obliterated a large part of the parish neighborhood.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In 1978, Father Silva retired from the priesthood and Cardinal Humberto Medeiros appointed Rev. Eusebio Silva as administrator of St. Anthony’s. When Father Eusebio assumed the pastorate of St. Anthony’s in Cambridge, Rev. Antonio Pinto was appointed interim priest. During this time, Deacon Richard Rocha also served at Saint Anthony's, starting from his ordination in May 1983. In 1990, Rev. </span><span>José S. Ferreira assumed the leadership of the church and was assisted by the Rev. Ronald Gomes. In 1995, Father Ferreira was transferred to St. Anthony’s in Cambridge, and Rev. Francis M. Glynn, the first non-Portuguese priest of the parish, became pastor. Father Glynn served during a period of a growing Brazilian community in Lowell, but also at the time of a major strike in the city at the Prince Pasta factory, which employed dozens of his parishioners. Father Glynn supported the striking workers and their families, but despite his efforts and many others, including Representative Martin Meehan and Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the corporation that owned the plant shut it down. </span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>In 2004, following Father Glynn’s assignment to a parish in Waltham, Massachusetts, Rev. Charles J. Hughes, became the pastor at St. Anthony’s. Father Hughes’ tenure proved a challenging time with declining parish membership and church closures in the wake of the numerous clergy sexual abuse cases in the Archdiocese. As with many other parishes, St. Anthony’s had no connection to any of these cases; however, it shared with many other churches increasing financial struggles and a continued drop in membership. Following Father Hughes’ departure in 2016, St. Anthony’s became part of the Lowell Collaborative in which it was joined with Immaculate Conception Church and Holy Trinity Church under the leadership of Rev. Nicholas A. Sannella. This administrative arrangement remains in place with Rev. Deacon Carlos DeSousa serving as a key clergyman at St. Anthony’s. </span></p>

ORIGINS OF THE FEAST OF THE HOLY GHOST
Wherever Azorean Communities exist, the Festas do Espirito Santo, The Feast of the Holy Ghost,
are celebrated with great devotion . Intense popular devotion to the Holy Ghost, uncommon in
other Catholic countries, is profoundly central to the religious lives of the Azorean people. The
Holy Ghost, the third person of the Blessed Trinity in Roman Catholic theology, is considered to
be almost a separate deity in the Azores, where He is Personified as a deified human being, and
presented as a powerful male.
In the Azores, the symbol of the Holy Ghost, the "Coroa", a silver crown with, a dove with outstretched wings on top, combines the dove -- the traditional Catholic symbol of the Holy Ghost
with the Portuguese imperial crown, a symbol of secular power and authority. The configuration of
religious activities, appropriate to these Holy Ghost celebrations, are specific to the Azores.
Many popular legends, told over and over during the celebrations, attribute the origins of these
Feasts to Saint Isabel, the wife of King Dom Dinis, and Queen of Portugal from 1295 to 1322.
Saint Isabel was born in the year 1271, and from her earliest years, displayed a deep faith and
piety to God. From the time she married Dom Dinis until her death, she was revered throughout
her Kingdom for her acts of charity, humility and devotion to her God and his people. She was
known as "the angel of charity," by her subjects for her devotion to the poor. She was also known
as "the mother of peace." Because of her intervention in the hour of a battle when she, unaccompanied, entered a battlefield, and reconcile kings and princes thus ending the horror of war. After
this great act of bravery and Christian love, she returned to her village of Alenquer. One night, in a
dream, a voice from Heaven proclaimed that Queen Isabel should establish a brotherhood of the
Holy Ghost in thanksgiving for the peace obtained and build a church in honor of the Holy Ghost
in the village.
The next morning, the Queen attended a Mass and during the Mass a vision appeared to her,
further detailing the plans for the project she had seen in her dreams. Immediately, she met with
the carpenters and workmen to begin work on the project and headed for the site indicated to
her in her dreams. Miraculously, when they reached the designed site they found the foundation
already formed and the plan of the building in outline. This unexplainable event was witnessed by
her husband, the King, and the entire village of Alenquer.
During the period of construction, many miracles occurred, a sign that the work was divinely inspired. The work was rapidly completed and stands today as one of the most beautiful and richest
chapels of the Holy Spirit in the world. The King ordered that the most precious and costly vestments and furnishings be used in the chapel and, with great pomp and solemnity, the first Mass
was celebrated in the chapel Pentecost Sunday. On that day the sovereigns instituted the Brotherhood of the Holy Ghost to insure that until the end of time there should never cease to exist
the devotion to the Holy Ghost in the beautiful sanctuary in Alenquer. A solemn procession was
part of that first celebration, in which the entire court and nobility took part. Games, tournaments
and bullfights were part of the festivities. One of the statutes of the original brotherhood was that
seven bulls highly ornamented, should be run and their meat, together with a loaf of bread , would
be distributed to the poor. Since that day, throughout these many centuries, the feast of the Holy
Ghost has been celebrated in Alenquer with great devotion and festivities.
Queen Isabel returned to the church in Alenquer every year to offer a great candle which burned
before the main altar during the octave of Pentecost. When a great famine and epidemic occurred
in Lisbon and surrounding areas, including Alenquer, and many people were dying daily, a great
penitential procession was held, during which the candle offered by Queen was carried and immediately the epidemic began to diminish until it ended entirely.
During the Pentecost season, the Queen, as an act of humility, would wash the linens of the sick
and the poor of the village of Alenquer, in the local river. Many people witnessed this great act of
devotion, and after her death the river was venerated and waters were known to possess miraculous curative powers.
Many miracles were attributed to Queen Isabel following her death on July 4, 1336. After her
death, steps were taken to have Queen Isabel canonized a saint. On June 1, 1616 Pope Paul IV
declared her blessed and gave permission to the people of Portugal to carry her crown and relics
through the streets in solemn procession . From this original crown, worn by St. Isabel, have been
fashioned the many crowns now in existence. Made of pure silver, they have on them the symbol
of the Holy Ghost, in the form of a dove on top of the crown and on the scepter, in memory of her
great devotion to the third person of the blessed trinity.
Over the years, many miracles were attributed to Queen Isabel, two of which were experienced
by Pope Urbano Ill. On May 25, 1625, Trinity Sunday, Pope Urbano Ill canonized Queen Isabel
as a saint.
From her original brotherhood of the Holy Ghost, formed in Alenquer, there have been many
brotherhoods established throughout the world wherever Azorean people have immigrated.
Splendid feasts are planned -- meat and bread are distributed to the poor and members of the
brotherhoods, solemn religious observances are held, members of the brotherhood are crowned
in solemn ceremonies in the church, and the day is spent feasting and rejoicing for the many
blessings received from the Holy Ghost.
Beginning at the end of the last century and the beginning of third century when the Azorean people started coming to this country, they brought with them the tradition of the feasts of the Holy
Ghosts. Since the arrival of the Portuguese people in Lowell, Massachusetts, feasts have been
held. The Holy Ghost Society, Inc. was officially established 90 years ago on August 24, 1923.
The purpose of the Holy Ghost Society was to furnish a place and means for the education and
recreation of its members and for the social, religious and civic purposes among its members.
With the initial purchase of two and a half acres of land, the society had a home. Over the years,
the society has improved its facilities until now, where a beautiful hall and outdoor area is available for the society to celebrate the feasts of the Holy Ghost with great dignity.
For ninety years, the Holy Ghost has blessed and guided the members of the society and
their families. We give thanks on this great milestone in the life of the society for the love
of the Holy Ghost, and ask for his continued blessings in the future.

Description
An account of the resource
By 1905, Lowell had nearly 1,000 Portuguese immigrants, the majority having been born in the Azores. Most lived in the vicinity of Charles Street in the “Back Central” neighborhood, which was home to St. Anthony’s Church and a number of Portuguese social and religious societies. Among the more prominent was the Holy Ghost Society, founded in 1907, by a group of Azorean immigrants. Rev. Joaquim V. da Rosa, from the island of Pico and the first pastor of St. Anthony’s, supported the Society’s establishment. The following year Fr. Rosa performed the Solemn Sunday Mass and coronation for the first Holy Ghost Festival in the city. A large procession with a band streamed down Central Street to a public hall where an overflowing crowd enjoyed sumptuous feast and beheld the finely crafted silver crown.
Over the first decade membership in the Holy Ghost Society grew. Although the annual Holy Ghost Festival, held on Pentecost Sunday, was the major event sponsored by the Society, members engaged in a variety of religious and social activities, including concerts and dances. By the mid-1910s the Holy Ghost Society had amassed sufficient funds to maintain a headquarters in the Odd Fellows Hall on Middlesex Street. In 1924, seeking a larger space for its many activities, the Society, which had incorporated under the laws of Massachusetts a year earlier, purchased over four acres of land on Village Street on the outskirts of Lowell. Over the years, the Holy Ghost grounds featured a clubhouse with a large hall, an amphitheater, a playground, and a soccer field. Although Azoreans continued to be the largest group within the Society, Portuguese from Madeira, mainland Portugal, and Brazil had become members and several served in leadership roles.
Beginning in 1959, Lowell’s Holy Ghost Society adopted a common practice at other Holy Ghost Festivals in the United States, the coronation of a queen, representing the Queen Saint Isabel, and the selection of two queen’s maids, all young women between the ages of 16 and 21. In addition to the coronation, the queen and her maids were a prominent part of the procession, standing on top of a colorfully decorated float, often towed, as was the popular custom, by a new convertible automobile.
In its early years, the Holy Ghost Society was led exclusively by Portuguese men, some who worked in factories and others who ran small businesses. Nonetheless, female members planned many annual activities and special events as participants in a ladies’ auxiliary. Beginning in the 1940s, however, women served as officers and presidents. The first female president, Clara (Silva) Correia, had immigrated from Graciosa, settled in Lowell in 1905, and had worked many years as a weaver in a textile mill. She was succeeded as president some years later by one of the best known members of the Society, Gladys (Mendonça) Picanso, a community activist who owned a popular hairstyling business in Lowell.
The Holy Ghost Society continues to sponsor the annual Holy Ghost Festival, along with other events and charitable activities. Many of these are held at Holy Ghost Park on Village Street.
But these events, whether they are concerts, dances, or sporting and recreational games, some of which include non-Portuguese participants, exhibit a distinctly Portuguese flair.

ORIGINS OF THE FEAST OF THE HOLY GHOST
Wherever Azorean communities exist, the Festas Do Espirito Santo, The Feast of the Holy Ghost, are celebrated with great
devotion. Intense popular devotion to the Holy Ghost, uncommon in other Catholic countries, is profoundly central to the re ligious lives of
the Azorean people. The Holy Ghost, the third person of the Blessed Trinity in Roman Catholic theology, is considered to be almost a
separate deity in the Azores, where He is personified as a deified human being, and presented as a powerful male .
In the Azores, the symbol of the Holy Ghost, the "Coroa", a silver crown with a dove with outstretched wings on top, combines
the dove -- the traditional Catholic symbol of the Holy Ghost with the Portuguese imperial crown, a symbol of secular power and authority.
The configuration of religious activities appropriate to these Holy Ghost celebrations are specific to the Azores.
Many popular legends, told over and over during the celebrations, attribute the origins of these Festas to Saint Isabel , the wife of
King Dom Dinis, and Queen of Portugal from 1295 to 1322. Saint Isabel was born in the year 1271, and from her earliest years displayed a
deep faith and piety to God. From the time she married Dom Dinis until her death, she was revered throughout her kingdom for her acts of
charity, humility and devotion to her God and his people. She was known as "the angel of charity," by her subjects for her devotion to the
poor. She was also known as "the mother of peace." Because of her intervention in the hour of battle when she, unaccompanied, entered a
battlefield, and reconciled kings and princes thus ending the horror of war. After this great act of bravery and Christian love she returned to
her home village of Alenquer. One night, in a dream, a voice from Heaven proclaimed that Queen Isabel should establish a brotherhood of
the Holy Ghost in thanksgiving for the peace obtained and build a church in honor of the Holy Ghost in the village.
The next morning the Queen attended Mass and during the Mass a vision appeared to ~er, further detailing the plans for the project
she had seen in her dreams. Immediately, she met with the carpenters and workmen to begin work on the project and headed for the site
indicated to her in her dreams. Miraculously, when they reached the designated site they found the foundation already formed and the plan
of the building in outline. This unexplainable event was witnessed by her husband, the King, and the entire village of Alenquer.
During the period of construction many miracles occurred, a sign that the work was divinely inspired. The work was rapidly
completed and stands today as one of the most beautiful and richest chapels of the Holy Spirit in the world. The King ordered that the most
precious and costly vestments and furnishings be used in the chapel and, with great pomp and solemnity, the first Mass was celebrated in the
chapel on Pentecost Sunday. On th at day the sovereigns instituted the Brotherhood of the Holy Ghost" to insure that until the end of time
there should never cease to exist the devotion to the Holy Ghost in the beautiful sanctuary in Alenquer. A solemn procession was part of
that fi rst celebration, in which th e entire court and nobility took part. Games, tournaments and bullfights were part of the festivities. One of
the statutes of the original brotherhood was that seven bulls highly orna mented, should be run and their meat, together with a loaf of bread
would be distributed to the poor. Since that day, throughout these many centuries, the feast of the Holy Ghost has been celebrated in
Alenquer with great devotion and festivities.
Queen Isabel returned to the ch urch in Alenquer every year to offer a great candle which burned before the main altar during the
octave of Pentecost. When a great famine and epidemic occurred in Lisbon and surrounding areas, including Alenquer, and many people
were dying daily, a great penitential procession was held, during which the candle offered by the Queen was carried and immediately the
epidemic began to diminish until it ended entirely.
During the Pentecost season the Queen, as an act of humility, would wash the linens of the sick and poor of the village of
Alenquer, in the local river. Many people witnessed this great act of devotion, and after her death the river was venerated and the waters
were known to possess miraculous curative powers.
Many miracles were attributed to Queen Isabel following her death on July 4, 1336. After her death, steps were taken to have
Queen Isabel canonized a saint. On June 1, 1616 Pope Paul IV declared her blessed and gave permission to the people of Portugal to carry
her crown and relics through the streets in solemn procession. From this original crown, worn by St. Isabel , have been fashioned the many
crowns now in existence. Made of pure silver, they have on them the symbol of the Hol y Ghost, in the form of a dove on the top of the
crown and on the sceptre, in memory of her great devotion to the third person of the blessed trinity.
Over the years, many miracles were attributed to Queen Isabel , two of which were ex perienced by Pope Urbano Ill. On May 25 ,
1625, Trinity Sunday, Pope Urbano Ill canonized Queen Isabel a saint.
From the origina l brotherhood of the Holy Ghost, formed in Alenquer, there have been many brotherhoods established throughout
the world wherever Azorean people have immigrated. Splendid feasts are planned -- meat and bread are distributed to the poor and
members of the brotherhoods, solemn religious observances are held, members of the brotherhood are crowned in solemn ceremonies in the
church and the day is spent feasting and rejoicing for the many blessings received from the Holy Ghost.
Beginning at the end of the last century and the beginning of this century when the Azorean people started comi ng to this country,
they brought with them the traditi on of the feasts of the Holy Ghosts. Since the arrival of the Portuguese people in Lowell, Massachusetts,
feasts have been held . The Holy Ghost Society, Inc. was officia lly established 75 years ago on August 24, J 923.
The purpose of the Holy Ghost Society was to furnish a place and means for the education and recreation of its members and for
the social, re ligious and civic purposes among it's members. With the initial purchase of two and one half acres of land, th e society had a
home. Over the years, the society has improved its facilities until now, where a beautiful hall and outdoor area is avai lable for the society to
celebrate with great dignity the Feasts of the Holy Ghost.
For seve nty five years the Holy Ghost has blessed and guided the Q1embers of the society and their families. We give th anks on
this great milestone in the life of the society for the love of the Holy Ghost and ask for hi s continu ed blessings in th e future .

Description
An account of the resource
Wherever Azorean communities exist, the Festas Do Espirito Santo, The Feast of the Holy Ghost, are celebrated with great devotion. Intense popular devotion to the Holy Ghost, uncommon in other Catholic countries, is profoundly central to the religious lives of the Azorean people. The Holy Ghost, the third person of the Blessed Trinity in Roman Catholic theology, is considered to be almost a separate deity in the Azores, where He is personified as a deified human being.
This booklet celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Holy Ghost Society in Lowell, MA, which is connected with St. Anthony's Church. The Society also owns a physical space where events are held.

Description
An account of the resource
This collection contains images related to the Rose family, focusing on the life of George W. Rose. Items include pictures from his childhood, his involvement in the local Cambridge, MA community, and material from his various business dealings. Most items focus on the time period between 1930-1980.<br /><br /><strong>Biographical Sketch</strong><br /><p>George W. Rose was a World War II veteran, entrepreneur, radio broadcaster, and activist in the Democratic Party in Massachusetts, as well as a delegate to the 1960 Democratic convention in which he was pledged to John F. Kennedy. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on August 16, 1921. His mother Anna (Souza) Rose (1882-1960), although born in Boston, had family roots in Sao Miguel, Azores. His Brazilian-born father, John Dutra Rose (1882-1951), who immigrated to the United States from Recife, had roots in Faial, Azores. Anna and John Rose raised nine children in Cambridge, with George being the youngest son.</p>
<p>At the time of George Rose’s birth, the Portuguese population in Cambridge was among the top five in Massachusetts. These Portuguese settled primarily in East Cambridge and by 1902 this community had grown to such an extent that the Boston archdiocese established St. Anthony’s parish. Most of East Cambridge’s Portuguese residents had immigrated from the Azores, notably Sao Miguel, and the majority were wage earners toiling in the city’s numerous factories.</p>
<p>George Rose’s father followed a slightly different path to East Cambridge. His mother, (George’s grandmother), Maria (Conceicão) Rose Oliver, or "Avo Salta" as the family lovingly refers to her, grew up in Horta, Faial, in a wealthy family. She wed John Dutra Rose but he proved to be an abusive husband. From her family she inherited an estate in Brazil in the coastal city of Recife and moved there. Apparently her husband joined her in Recife and she birth to her only son, also named John Dutra Rose. Perhaps with the hope that he would find more opportunity in the United States, his mother sent him at age 14 to Boston. Eventually she separated from her husband, left Brazil for Massachusetts, and remarried.</p>
<p>Upon his arrival in Boston, John Dutra Rose found work on a farm in Dighton, Massachusetts, living there and in New Bedford where he attended public school and learned English. John Dutra Rose subsequently moved to Cambridge, married George’s mother, Anna (Souza) Rose, and found work in the Cambridge Rubber Company’s factory, known for its production of rubber boots and a large employer of Portuguese. He would later establish a small repair business, specializing in the restoration of religious statuary.</p>
<p>Similar to many others of his generation in East Cambridge, George Rose grew up in a household where Portuguese was spoken, but he attended public schools and learned to navigate through both Portuguese and American cultures. After completing his grammar school education at the Putnam School, Rose entered Rindge Technical High School. Financial hardship in his family in the wake of the Great Depression, led him to apply for and receive a job in the federal Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He left school and moved to Colorado. His work with the CCC included the operation of heavy construction equipment and by 1940 he returned to Massachusetts, enlisting in the U.S.</p>
<p>Army and training in ordinance at Fort Devens, as well as in army construction equipment and maintenance at Fort Edwards.</p>
<p>Following Pearl Harbor and the entry of the United States into World War II, George Rose served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers, participating in three major invasions: Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and Cebu in the Philippines. He spent a total of 34 months in combat duty in the South Pacific. Before his honorable discharge in 1945, he attained the rank of Sargent of the Guard at Fort Devens, and received a number of combat awards and medals, including a Presidential Unit Citation and three battle stars.</p>
<p>In 1945, while at Fort Devens, Rose met and married Mary Frances Turner of Haverhill, Massachusetts. The following year they had a daughter, Maureen Frances, the first of nine children. The other eight children, born between 1947 and 1965, were Sharon Ann, Carol Lee, George W. Jr., Marilyn Bernice, Donna Marie, Charles John, Kenneth Robert, and Judith Ann. George Rose purchased a house in Cambridge, before moving to nearby Medford.</p>
<p>To support his growing family Rose engaged in a number of businesses. This ranged from a refuse removal company to an asphalt paving firm. He also engaged in real estate, gaining accreditation through the Harvard University Extension program. He also attended the Calvin Coolidge College (no longer operating) in Boston, receiving a liberal arts degree in 1960. In addition, Rose was a well-known member of the Lusitania Club of Cambridge and was heavily involved in a number of charitable organizations, serving as president of the Cambridge Lions Club, chairman of the Cambridge Kiwanis Underprivileged Children’s Fund, and was a fund raiser for the Home for Italian Children in Boston.</p>
<p>Apart from his business activities, Rose, a talented athlete, excelling in basketball and soccer, played semi-professional soccer and nearly made the U.S. Olympic soccer team in 1956. He was well-known in the Boston area’s Portuguese community not only for his participation and leadership in a number of Portuguese social and cultural organizations, but also as a radio broadcaster on “The Portuguese Hour,” heard on Medford’s station WHIL, in which he was part-owner.</p>
<p>In part influenced by his older brother John Dutra Rose, Jr., who was active in local politics in Cambridge, George Rose became deeply involved in Democratic Party politics at the local, state, and national levels. An early supporter of John F. Kennedy, Rose was a delegate to the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles, in 1960. During presidential campaign he accompanied Kennedy to a number of rallies in the Boston area, translating for the many Portuguese in attendance. He was later a consultant for and friend of Congressman Thomas “Tip” O’Neil, as well as Governor Michael Dukakis.</p>
<p>In the 1960s and 1970s, George Rose was involved in a number of businesses, including restaurants and hotels, north of Boston, and in an automobile tire recycling firm. Dedicated to his family and friends, while always prizing his Portuguese heritage, Rose also took up painting and poetry. He retired from business in the early 1980s and</p>
<p>moved with his wife to Fort Meyers, Florida. Following his death in 1988, he received numerous accolades for his community service and charitable work, and was bestowed with a public square in Cambridge named after him and dedicated by Mayor Alfred Vellucci.</p>

Real Estate Office
When I had the Real Estate office - on the corner of 7th and Camb. St. E. Camb.
I had two partners - one was Bill Smith who owned three bar rooms - and the other one was Charlie Burke - who owned a Rest and Submarine Sandwich Shop on Camb. St. Next door to the Italian Church St. Francis of Assisi - [illegible] Al Vellucci (Mayor) and Joe [illegible].
I had a file - the Irish Church was the Sacred Heart on 6th St. State Rep John Toomey and Father Ferrick who was a priest born in E. Camb. The Portuguese Church St. Anthony was on the corner of Camb. St. and Portland. We had the Irish and Lithuanian use the St. Patrick on Berkshire St. Walter Sullivan Councillor and Sen Dan O'Brien used to attend mass there. We also had St. Hendricks on [illegible] St. That was the Polish Church. St. Zelewiski the undertaker and a fellow head of the Polish Club were the ward bosses for that Church - Each church had its own politicians and ward bosses to get things done for them.
Now I used to go to most of them and knew quite a few people from all nationalities.
The nuns from the Sacred Heart would come in and sell me tickets to their affairs - I had a file on my desk. All the churches used to come in to sell me + Bill tickets to all of their events. The old folks senior citizens would also come in with chance books of some kind - I always took them. They would always go out of our office happy. I would buy two - The Esquire Bar + Lounge of which I owned half interest - Rose's Disposal Service - I ran LoPardo was my partner - Mystic Maintenance Corp. - of which I owned half interest and was Gen. Mgr. Plus the east Cambridge Real Estate office - So I could always find a check to buy tickets to help any charity in the neighborhood. We also sponsored softball teams or basketball teams in the neighborhood suits sneakers ect. We also sponsored a boxing club at the St. Francis Church (Italian Church) and [illegible] and cards Ping Pong, for the kids. I would always have a few drunks who would stop by in the mornings to get a cup of coffee - We always had a pot on. They would sleep out all night - Then I would give them a note to go to Mannie Costa my partner at the Esquire Bar to give them a free meal no beer no money. I think that is why god had been good to me. I did a lot of charity in my time. And got alot of people jobs and favors often. It made me feel good.
Patty Michaels had an office down the street from us 6 blocks near the Ital. Church. I would send customers to her office and she would give our office a cut if she made a sale or any money on whoever I recommended to her. She was pretty honest w/ us.
Walter Sullivan, Eddit Sul. Al Velluci State Rep Pete Velluci the Chief of Police Tony Palillo would also stop in once in a while for a cup of coffee and shoot the breeze with us. We had Jimmy Sower. He was weighted at one time and worked for the boys in the North End. He was in our office every day. He lived just one block up from us. He was a good guy - along with Eddie [illegible] who was a friend of mine for years. I got him a job w/ Sears Roebuck in Boston during a [illegible] for local 25 - He became the shop stewart - and when I had some problems w/ the Union 10 years later he was there to help me out.
My men used to take the rubbish off of the platform. Now some time we would have to wait until Sears men would bring it out to the platform. The Union used to raise hell when we would go in ourselves and roll the four wheel trucks w/ the rubbish and cardboard to the [illegible] platform. They tried to get me thrown out of there. But the manager and Eddie Bangs wouldn't let the Union do anything to my men and my trucks. So I kept the account for 3 years. It paid for me to have gotten Eddie that job years ago.
So many times I got people jobs, and later on in years they were in a position to return the favor. The women cop on the beat who used to be the meter maid in front of our office - She would overlook our cars not putting dimes in the meters - She used to stop in two times a day for her coffee - once in a while we would have to put money in when the Sgt was in the area checking her.
Charlie Burke also a partner in the E. Camb Realty Office - His nephew lived up stair over us. He kept his bike in our back room at the office. He was Cambridge Police Officer. His father Charlie Burkes brother was Lt. on the Camb. police and lived 3 doors down on the side street. He too was always in our office. We had Rep. Peter Vellucci Sen. Michael LoPresti and many other pols who liked to stop in also Judges who were friends of ours enjoyed talking to us.
We had poor and rich - sick and unfortunate. We had a good relationship with all departments of the city of Camb. We used to get invited to everything that was going on in the area. Always some one to do a favor for.
(Billy Maher was head of the Police internal affairs Dept. and was a good friend of mine)
Between Billy Smith Charlie Burke or myself we could do just about anything in the City and the people knew it. Senator Dennis McKenna would stop in to see me also once in a while.
We never knew who was going to stop in to say hellow to me mostly State Rep. from Somervill Marie Haue. She used to do alot of favors for people. I wanted to her in good w/ the Portuguese people because there were alot of them in Som. Manny Rogers son was also very active and he helped the Portuguese. He was pres of the Portuguese Credit Union Inman Sq. Camb. and I know his dad Manny Rogers very well. A peach of a man. He buried my son Geo Jr. when he died at the age of 27 yrs. He was great to me and my family.
Al Vellucci was the mayor of Camb. and he was always calling me to help some charity he was involved in for the City. We had the Warren Pals. Club on Warren St. Bugger Lampassi Joe Niealoro, Camb Bd. of Health Comm. Bill [illegible] Jim Parcie Income Tax inspector, Arthur [illegible] - and many more were influential people in the city hall - we had strength in all walks of life in Camb. Al Vellucci Jr. was head of the Camb City Hospital and many times Portuguese or others who could not pay their hospital bill and Al Jr. would take care of the bill for the poor people. This would also help his father the mayor and his brother the State Rep Peter Velucci to get some votes.
I told Al Vellucci one time I was going to take out my papers to run for City Councillor because he ignored me on some favor I had asked him to do for some poor unfortunate person. A Portuguese. I said to Al "If he was an Italian you would do it in a minute" When I said I would run against him he went pale and boy did I always get action after that time to this date.
I helped him very much with some of my Portuguese people to get the new Dante [illegible] Society building built and get it started. I donated money and materials and trucks along with my good from John Serpa Portuguese contractor
