The Military Order of Christ

INVOCATION
Rev. Father Manuel Rocha, Ph.D., Gregorian
University of Rome, Italy; Ph.D., University of Louvain, Belgium

The practice of rewarding civil and military achievements grew
out of the medieval custom of conferring knighthood. The incessant
private warfare that characterized early medieval times brought
about a permanent military class, and by the I 0th century, the
institution of knighthood was well established.
At the time of the Crusades, the great military orders of
knighthood were formed throughout Europe. From their earliest
periods, these military orders had their counterparts in Portugal.
Important among these were the Knights Templars, who
received gifts of estates and money, and soon became one of the
most beneficent orders in Europe.
In 1319, King Dinis of Portugal was able, through his
diplomatic efforts, to obtain permission from Pope John XXII to
transfer the properties of the Portuguese Templars to a completely
new order. This new order would be specifically designed to protect
the Christians from Moslem raids and would be given the name: The
Military Order of Christ. Thus was this new order endowed with
ample property, including the stronghold Castro Marim near the
mouth of the Guadiana River on the Spanish border.
By the time Prince Henry the Navigator became Grand Master a
century later, the Military Order of Christ had achieved its position
as Portugal's prime offensive weapon against the Moslems. Prince
Henry the Navigator was able to use the order's vast resources in the
wider field of overseas discoveries to which his greater imagination
carried him and his country. For this reason, one finds the emblem
of the Order of Christ on the banners and sails of the ships of
Portugal's Golden Age of Discovery.
The decoration of the Gran-Cruz of the Military Order of Christ
has been conferred upon Archbishop Medeiros by the President of
Portugal, America Tomas, in recognition of the Archbishop's singular
rise in the Catholic world. Archbishop Medeiros has attained unique
distinction as a humanitarian, scholar, theologian and as a Christian
soldier working in behalf of the faith of the land of his birth.
Archbishop Medeiros was born on the Portuguese island of St.
Michael in the Azores. It is interesting to note that this archipelago
was discovered under the auspices of that order whose highest
insignia has been conferred upon Archbishop Medeiros: the Military
Order of Christ.

Biographical Note
Born on the Azorean island of Terceira, in the village of Biscoitos, in 1950; Dimas Espinola immigrated with his family to the United States in the late 1960s, settling in Lowell’s “Back Central” (predominately Portuguese) neighborhood; his father, formerly a furniture maker in Biscoitos, obtained a job as a loom fixer in the Wannalancit Mills; his mother worked in a shoe factory; Mr. Espinola received his formal education in schools on Terceira and, upon arriving in Lowell, he secured a work permit and, at nearly 17 years of age, he was employed in a manufacturing job in the Paris shoe factory on Bridge Street; at the same time Mr. Espinola, a communicant at St. Anthony’s Church, began working closely with the pastor, Rev. John F. deSilva; among his activities was translating English for Portuguese members of the community, which included various issues affecting the neighborhood, including a state proposed extension of the Lowell Connector highway that threatened many homes and businesses in the “Back Central” neighborhood; in addition to his community activism and work with the church, Mr. Espinola also became involved with the Portuguese-American Center (and its soccer team), as well as the Holy Ghost Society; he remained in the shoe industry for many years, becoming a foreman and factory manager.

<text>This collection includes photographs, newspaper clippings, and documents from the Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1 organization in Peabody, Massachusetts. This includes photo albums of Peabody during World War II, newspaper clippings related to Portuguese soldiers and PAWV Post 1 members who fought in World War II, photographs of the Ladies' Auxiliary and other PAWV Post 1 members and related organizations, images from city-wide parades, articles about the organization's fundraising efforts and community service work over the years, letters from government representatives and politicians, membership records and lists, certificates recognizing the military service of PAWV Post 1 members, and other documents related to the members and history of the Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1.

Historical Overview:
Information sourced from the "Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1 membership brochure" as found on PADA. Edits and additional information have been added by the archivist.

The Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1 organization was founded on December 13th, 1945 in Peabody, MA. In an effort led by the organization’s first Commander, Mr. Henry Leal, in his home on 4 1/2 Sprague Street, a group of World War I and World War II veterans decided to charter a veterans' support group in an old elementary school building on Tremont Street. Founded as a social club to support the large number of Portuguese veterans returning to Peabody after the war, the PAWV Post 1 evolved to become one of the primary centers and homes for veterans and community service organizations on the North Shore as well as other community endeavors.

The original members of the PAWV Post 1 included: Commander Henry Leal, Edward M. Madruga, Joseph P. Sousa, Charles J. Silvaria, John F. Luz, Francis E. Paul, Anthony Silva, Albert J. Silva, Joseph M. Ortins and early members Americo Martins and Tony Pimenta. The group had agreed to organize under the mission to "uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, to encourage a spirit of comradeship among the members, to preserve the memory of our associations in the Great Wars, to promote good will and peace on earth and to devote our comradeship to mutual helpfulness to Veterans and their families."

Eligible members of the Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1 include: Veterans who hold a DD-214 or NGB 22 discharge document under "Honorable" conditions from the United States Armed Forces, or any Member still serving on Active or Inactive Duty. Any other person who, regardless of veteran status, upon reaching the age of 21 can submit an application to become an Associate Member of PAWV Post 1. Other tenant organizations represented by the PAWV Post 1 include the Yankee Division Veterans Association (YDVA), the Second Corps of Cadets (2CCVA), the Polish League of American Veterans (PLAV) and the Banda Recreativa Portuguesa.

Over the past eighty years, the PAWV has contributed to the City of Peabody's Memorial Day remembrances and parades, Dia de Portugal celebrations, and assisted with the Portuguese community’s contributions to the City of Peabody’s Centennial celebration and parade. As a result of its work and contributions to the Portuguese community, the Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1, was nominated by the Portuguese American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS) for a National Community Award, which was presented to Commander John Silva on October 11, 2014 in Washington DC.

Today, the members of the PAWV Post—which include the post-WWII veterans of Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Kosovo, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq—continue to celebrate and honor their military service by striving to be a cornerstone for veteran support and community service in the North Shore area.</text>
