The Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1 organization was founded on December 13th, 1945 in Peabody, MA. In an effort led by the organization’s first Commander, Mr. Henry Leal, in his home on 4 1/2 Sprague Street, a group of World War I and World War II veterans decided to charter a veterans' support group in an old elementary school building on Tremont Street. Founded as a social club to support the large number of Portuguese veterans returning to Peabody after the war, the PAWV Post 1 evolved to become one of the primary centers and homes for veterans and community service organizations on the North Shore as well as other community endeavors.

The original members of the PAWV Post 1 included: Commander Henry Leal, Edward M. Madruga, Joseph P. Sousa, Charles J. Silvaria, John F. Luz, Francis E. Paul, Anthony Silva, Albert J. Silva, Joseph M. Ortins and early members Americo Martins and Tony Pimenta. The group had agreed to organize under the mission to "uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, to encourage a spirit of comradeship among the members, to preserve the memory of our associations in the Great Wars, to promote good will and peace on earth and to devote our comradeship to mutual helpfulness to Veterans and their families."

Eligible members of the Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1 include: Veterans who hold a DD-214 or NGB 22 discharge document under "Honorable" conditions from the United States Armed Forces, or any Member still serving on Active or Inactive Duty. Any other person who, regardless of veteran status, upon reaching the age of 21 can submit an application to become an Associate Member of PAWV Post 1. Other tenant organizations represented by the PAWV Post 1 include the Yankee Division Veterans Association (YDVA), the Second Corps of Cadets (2CCVA), the Polish League of American Veterans (PLAV) and the Banda Recreativa Portuguesa. 

Over the past eighty years, the PAWV has contributed to the City of Peabody's Memorial Day remembrances and parades, Dia de Portugal celebrations, and assisted with the Portuguese community’s contributions to the City of Peabody’s Centennial celebration and parade. As a result of its work and contributions to the Portuguese community, the Portuguese American War Veterans Post 1, was nominated by the Portuguese American Leadership Council of the United States (PALCUS) for a National Community Award, which was presented to Commander John Silva on October 11, 2014 in Washington DC.

Today, the members of the PAWV Post—which include the post-WWII veterans of Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Kosovo, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq—continue to celebrate and honor their military service by striving to be a cornerstone for veteran support and community service in the North Shore area.
