Fábio Mendes

My great great grandfather was born in São Mateus - Praia da Graciosa. He lived in Lagoa (São Mateus) when he emmigrated to the USA around 1900. His name was Manuel de Sousa da Silva. I have a couple of pictures of him here in Graciosa island where I live. I also know that when he emmigrated he knew how to read and write and that he played euphonium at the local brass band - Sociedade Filarmónica União Praiense - which he helped founding in 1889. His signature is in the founding papers.

I was wondering if he is the Manuel de Sousa da Silva mentioned as member of the Portuguese Benefit Society of Our Lady of Help. He lived in Lawrence, Mass.

He had at least 2 daughters - Rosa Aurélia da Silva (my great grandmother) and Mariana Aurélia da Silva, who moved to the USA with him. Rosa Aurélia da Silva came back to the island around 1910 and lost conection with the rest of the family, that I know of.

Would be thankful if you can help me with this matter.

Best regards,

Fábio Mendes
