Biographical Note:
The Portuguese American community in Lawrence is as old as the city itself. When the city received its charter in 1853, Andrew Mideros was already working at his barber shop at the corner of Lawrence and Common Streets. In 1931, John B. Sears organized the Mens' Council for the Portuguese American Civic League, with Manuel Sears elected as its president. A Ladies' Council was formed one year later with Mrs. Jessie Espinola at the helm. In 1941, under the direction of President Alvaro S. Gaiolas, the group purchased a Club building from the United Spanish War Veterans. The Lawrence Portuguese American Club is still located in this building today at 2 Saratoga Street.
